Giovanna Declich (Rome, 20 April 1964 – 30 January 2023) was a sociologist, trainer and expert in project design and evaluation. She was a brilliant and passionate researcher, particularly in the fields of equality and social justice and took part for over thirty years in several studies and research projects (in Europe, Africa and Latin America) on many subjects, such as the evaluation of the quality of public services, particularly health services, the evaluation of development projects, migratory process, and the dynamics of social exclusion and poverty.
However, her greatest commitment has been to studying and helping to overcome gender inequalities in their various manifestations: in economic decisions, in politics and, with particular intensity over the last fifteen years, in scientific and technological research.
In the latter field, she has directed several European projects aimed at promoting gender equality in universities and research institutes in Italy and other European countries, working on the measurement of inequalities and the identification of the problems underlying them, as well as on the measures taken to address them and their impact.
The seminar will focus on these areas of her work. It includes an introductory session and two working sessions. The introductory session will be centred on Giovanna and her contribution to research (and action) on gender equality in science. The first working session will deal with the complex challenge of measuring inequalities, while the second will focus on designing institutional change plans for gender equality in universities and research institutions and discussing their impact.
Through its basic and applied research programme, Knowledge and Innovation aims to contribute to the generation of new knowledge about contemporary societies and the transformations taking place within them. In doing so, it aims to promote a general strengthening of the social sciences’ capacity to interpret ongoing processes of change, to understand how they evolve over time, and to explore the options and tools available for their effective management.
Knowledge and Innovation was established by a group of sociologists and social scientists wishing to capitalise on their joint research programme on the evolution and governance of society, which began in the late 1970s (see Activities section).
The activities of Knowledge and Innovation are carried out in Italy, Europe and internationally, with an interdisciplinary approach that includes all levels of social research: epistemological, theoretical and methodological.
Knowledge and Innovation is also active in areas related to research, such as training and capacity building, networking and scientific communication, evaluation and technical assistance, consultancy and support for the implementation of public policies.
In July 2018, Knowledge and Innovation was granted Special Consultative Status by the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).
